K W Joyce Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

K W Joyce Reserve is a large open oval on Watsons Road in Pascoe Vale, in Melbourne's north, run by Merri-bek City Council and set along the Westbreen Creek corridor. It is a popular local dog run, but the detail that decides your visit is timing: off-leash here is restricted to set windows rather than open all day.

The dog setup

Under the council's current dog off-leash order, this is an off-leash area only before 9:00am and after 5:00pm; outside those windows the oval reverts to on-leash. Dogs must stay under effective voice or hand control with a leash carried at all times, and come back on the lead within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and any organised sport. When a match is on, the oval is off limits to dogs entirely, and the playground and the creek area are no-go zones at all times. Bags are your responsibility, so carry them and use the bins.

The vibe

The reserve is a big grassed oval with a perimeter path and lighting, which is what makes the early and late off-leash windows workable through a Melbourne winter. It leans open green space and creek-side bushland rather than a built-up playground precinct, and facilities on the field itself are limited, so bring your own water bowl and waste bags. The unfenced boundary plus the time limit makes it a park for dogs with decent recall.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Watsons Road and the neighbouring streets. The reserve sits within walking distance of Pascoe Vale Station on the Craigieburn line, with local buses along Cumberland Road and Boundary Road for anyone arriving on foot.

When to go

Expect the oval to be busiest in the half hour either side of the off-leash windows, since those are the only times the dogs can run. Weekend mornings fill fast, so check the sporting schedule before you go and have a fallback.
