Austin Crescent Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Austin Crescent Reserve is a small neighbourhood reserve in a residential pocket of Pascoe Vale, run by Merri-bek City Council and threading along the Westbreen Creek corridor. The dog off-leash area is an open grassy space for a run and a ball game rather than a fenced dog park, so keep expectations local.

The rules

Dogs go off-leash within the designated area as long as they stay under effective voice or hand control, and you must carry a lead at all times. There is no perimeter fence, so treat the boundary as open. Dogs are prohibited within 15 metres of the children's playground equipment, must stay out of the creek itself, and come back on-lead within 15 metres of any sporting ground or its boundary fence. Bring your own waste bags, as none are supplied.

Max: open boundary, a playground close by and a creek running through it. Fine for a solid recaller, but keep a distractible dog on lead until you have seen how this reserve behaves.

What's there

Grassy open space with bench seating and shade from boundary trees, plus a drinking water tap. The reserve's climbing-themed playground is well regarded, and there are undercover picnic tables, electric barbecues and a public toilet, which puts it a notch above most off-leash ovals. The linear trail along the creek makes an easy warm-up or cool-down walk on-lead.

Getting there

Access is off Austin Crescent, Pascoe Vale, with a small off-street car park at the reserve and street parking in the adjacent streets. Local buses serve the wider area, and the Craigieburn line stations at Oak Park or Pascoe Vale are a reasonable walk.

Close by with the dogs

Busiest on weekday evenings and weekend mornings; mid-morning and weekday afternoons are quieter. If your dog is nervous around kids and prams, the playground edge makes the quiet windows worth aiming for.
