Alf Pearce Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Alf Pearce Reserve Fenced Dog Park on First Avenue, Strathmore, is a secure, fully fenced off-leash area run by Moonee Valley City Council, and one of the better-equipped fenced parks in the area. Double-gated entry, granitic sand and rocky underfoot surfaces, and a separate area for small or timid dogs make it a solid choice for regulars and nervous first-timers alike.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash within the fenced area 24/7, but must go back on lead in the broader Alf Pearce Reserve outside the fence line. Owners need to stay in the park with their dogs and keep them under voice control. Waste bags are provided but bring your own as backup, and clean up straight away. Remove any dog showing aggression immediately.

What's there. Agility gear including hurdles and ramps, a drinking fountain with a dog bowl, and plenty of seating, including a raised rocky mound with a view over the park. Shade is only partial, so it's worth timing visits around the heat. There are no public toilets on site.

Getting there. The park is at 5 First Ave, Strathmore, with on-street parking available. It's reachable off the M2 Tullamarine Freeway and M80 Western Ring Road, and Strathmore station is a walkable, if not short, distance away with local buses also nearby.

Watch-outs. This is a popular park and it shows: weekday evenings around 5 to 6pm and weekend mornings and afternoons get crowded fast. If your dog is shy or reactive, a weekday morning or Thursday midday visit is a much easier introduction. The granitic sand copes with rain reasonably well but can turn dusty in dry spells and puddle in low spots after heavy rain.

Napier Street's cafe strip and the Moonee Ponds Creek trail are both a short drive away for a coffee or a longer walk to round out the visit. Go early on weekends if you want the run of the place, and outside peak evening hours if your dog needs a bit of space to settle in.
