Alf Pearce Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Alf Pearce Reserve Fenced Dog Park on First Avenue is Moonee Valley's best-equipped fenced dog park, and one of its busiest. Double-gated airlock entry, a granitic sand main run with agility gear, and a separate gated zone for small, older or timid dogs make it a genuine all-rounder: confident social dogs get a proper crowd, nervous first-timers get a corner to settle in.

The dog setup

Off-leash runs around the clock inside the fence; outside it, the broader Alf Pearce Reserve is on-lead, so clip up the moment you step out the gates. Owners stay inside with their dogs and keep them under voice control. Bag dispensers and bins are provided, though backup bags are smart, and a drinking fountain with a dog bowl tap handles water. Agility hurdles and ramps and a raised rocky mound give energetic dogs something beyond flat running. Shade is partial and there are no public toilets on site.

The vibe

This is a popular park and it shows: weekday evenings around 5 to 6pm and weekend mornings and afternoons get crowded fast. If your dog is shy or reactive, a weekday morning or a Thursday midday visit is a far easier introduction. The granitic sand copes with rain better than lawn but turns dusty in dry spells and puddles in the low spots after heavy weather.

Pepsi: close the first gate before opening the second. It stops the bolt for the exit when another dog rushes the fence line.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 5 First Avenue, Strathmore, with on-street parking available. It is reachable off the M2 Tullamarine Freeway and M80 Western Ring Road, and Strathmore station is walkable, if not short, with local buses nearby.

While you're out there

Revitalise in Strathmore and Coffee Joint on Napier in Essendon both do a good post-park coffee, Bent Street Fenced Dog Park is Moonee Ponds' fenced alternative, and the Maribyrnong River loop adds a longer on-lead walk to the day.
