Cliff Whitworth Reserve Dog Park Off Leash

Cliff Whitworth Reserve Dog Park at 37A Emerald Street, Essendon West is a fully fenced off-leash area with secure double-gate entries, giving owners confidence that dogs can run freely within the enclosure without slipping out. Moonee Valley Council opened the park specifically to give the suburb a dedicated fenced dog space.

The dog setup

Dogs may be off-leash only inside the fenced enclosure; in the surrounding parkland they need to be back on leash and stay 15 metres from children's playgrounds, barbecues and exercise equipment. Because the reserve sits near wildlife habitat, keep your dog under effective control at all times, and pick up after them. Inside the fence you get a large main running area plus a smaller separate space suited to smaller or shy dogs, a small agility and training section with an A-frame and hurdles, water fountains with pet bowls, benches, and dog waste bags and bins around the park. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.

Worth knowing

The park is rarely overwhelmed: it draws bigger crowds on Friday afternoons and evenings and Thursday mornings, while Monday and Tuesday evenings are reliable for a quieter visit. Avoid Friday afternoons if your dog is nervous around other dogs. The main area is spacious enough that most dogs can keep a comfortable distance from one another off-peak.

Getting there and parking

Street parking is generally available on Emerald Street. The park sits between Essendon West and Niddrie, with local bus routes running along nearby arterial roads such as Hoffmans Road, and it is a reasonable walk from the Niddrie shopping precinct.

Close by with the dogs

Mister Hoffman in Niddrie is the closest cafe, roughly five minutes away, and Matte Black in Essendon is another option if you are heading back that way. For a second fenced option, Bent Street Fenced Dog Park at Moonee Ponds is the closest alternative.
