JP Fawkner Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

JP Fawkner Reserve on Francis St is Oak Park's local off-leash spot, a big open reserve built around a football oval with mature trees for shade and enough room for a proper run.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash on the oval when it is not in use, but must go back on lead within 15 metres of any sporting ground, fencing or pavilion, and whenever organised sport or training is underway. Pick up after your dog, with bins provided on site.

What's there. The oval is only partially fenced with noticeable gaps, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than bolters. Seating is available under the mature trees, but bring your own water bowl since fountains are not guaranteed.

Getting there. On-street parking runs along Francis St. Oak Park station on the Craigieburn line is a short walk away if you are coming by train.

Watch-outs. Weekday evenings, especially Tuesday to Thursday, often have club training on the oval, which pushes dogs to the leashed margins. Check before you go if off-leash time is the point of the visit.

Nearby with the dogs. Francis Winifred cafe on Winifred St is close enough for a coffee after, with outdoor seating that welcomes dogs.

When to go. Weekday mid-mornings are quietest and clear of training sessions. Weekend mornings between 9 and 11 draw the biggest crowd of regulars.
