JP Fawkner Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

JP Fawkner Reserve on Francis Street is Oak Park's local off-leash reserve, a big open space built around a football oval with mature trees, sports pavilions and the Moonee Ponds Creek along its western edge. It is a working sports ground that doubles as a dog run when the codes clear off, and the creek adds a splash option most suburban reserves can't offer.

The dog setup

Dogs run off lead on the oval when organised sport and training are not underway, under Merri-bek City Council's off-lead rules. The 15-metre rule does the heavy lifting: dogs go back on lead within 15 metres of any sporting ground, fencing or pavilion, and the same buffer applies to the children's playground. Carry a leash, keep effective control, and use the bins for waste.

One honest warning: the oval is only partially fenced, with noticeable gaps near the edges and roads. This is a recall park, not a containment park, so clip on until you know your dog will stick around, and give the road-side edges a wide berth with a new or bolting dog.

Pepsi: the creek is the payoff on the west side, but keep an eye on what dogs drink and splash in after rain. Runoff beats creek water for a swim spot you regret.

Worth knowing

There are drinking taps with dog bowls around the park, paved paths looping the ovals for prams and bikes, bench seating and shade from established trees. The creek-side tracks make it easy to turn a run into a proper on-lead walk along the Moonee Ponds Creek corridor.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 1A Francis Street, Oak Park, with street parking along Francis Street and larger parking areas near the pavilions. Oak Park station on the Craigieburn line is a short walk if you are coming by train, and Coburg is just across the border to the east.

When to go

Weekday mid-mornings are quietest and usually clear of training. Weekday evenings, Tuesday to Thursday in particular, often have club training on the oval that pushes dogs back to the on-lead margins, so check whether a session is on if off-lead time is the whole point. Weekend mornings between 9 and 11 draw the regular crowd.

Close by with the dogs
