Mr Wednesday

Mr Wednesday is the back-streets Fairfield brunch cafe at 144 Wingrove Street, a few steps from Fairfield Station, and its courtyard has become a regular stop for dog owners working through the Yarra-side walking routes. The kitchen leans hearty: house-made pastries, an all-day breakfast and a burger list, all washed down with specialty-grade coffee.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard, with footpath tables as a backup on busy mornings. The main building stays human-only. Staff are used to four-legged guests and usually bring water out unprompted. The courtyard fills fast on weekends, so a midweek visit is the easy way to guarantee a table with your dog in tow.

The vibe

Cosy and neighbourhood-flavoured, with the fritter stack and the cronuts doing the heavy lifting on the menu and plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options alongside. Doors open 7am with the kitchen winding up around 2:30pm. There is a second life to the venue too: Bar Wednesday, the wine and cocktail bar tucked behind the cafe, runs Thursday to Saturday evenings, though that side of the operation is a leave-the-dog-at-home affair.

Getting there and parking

Fairfield Station on the Hurstbridge line is around the corner, which makes the train the simplest arrival. Driving means Wingrove Street parking or the surrounding residential streets, plus a commercial lot nearby; the venue does not take online reservations, so walk in or call ahead on 0490 500 656 for larger groups.

Make a day of it

The off-lead space at T H Westfield Reserve is the natural pre-brunch run, and the Darebin Parklands loop links up a short distance south for a longer walk. Down by the river, the Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens is the other established dog-friendly institution, and Hoppa and Joe covers the wingrove-adjacent coffee lap.
