Grind Espresso

Grind Espresso has been part of the Cronulla coffee routine since 2002, pouring from a small shopfront near the train station and a short walk from South Cronulla beach. The focus is coffee first, with a rotating bean of the day, a serious long black and a pistachio cookie worth the detour, and it has a reputation as one of the most reliably dog-friendly stops in the Shire.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, which make up most of the seating, on a lead. Staff are accommodating and will usually find space for a dog at the front tables even when the shop is humming. Bring your own water bowl on hot mornings to be safe. This is a coffee-stop layout rather than a long-sit one, which suits most beach-walk mornings anyway.

Worth knowing

Hours run from 5:30am weekdays and Saturday, from 5am Sunday, closing mid-afternoon, so it fits dawn walkers before the crowd arrives. The food menu is deliberately simple; the coffee is the reason people queue. South Cronulla beach itself bans dogs from the sand during the day, so plan the walk on the esplanade path instead.

Getting there and parking

Find it at 14-16/2 Surf Road, Cronulla, an easy walk from the station, the ferry wharf and the beach. Street parking nearby is free but fills fast on weekend mornings; the early start is your friend here.

Close by with the dogs

For an actual off-lead run, the Greenhills Beach Dog Off Lead area has morning windows for off-lead ocean time, and the Silver Beach dog beach section at Kurnell allows off-lead around the clock with calm water for paddling. The Helena Street Park Fenced Dog Park is the fully fenced fallback, and Top Shop at Wanda is the natural second coffee.
