Apsley Place Fenced Dog Park is a small, fully fenced off-leash area behind the baseball fields at the end of Apsley Place, Taren Point. It is a quiet, no-frills local spot rather than a regional showpiece, and it carries one quirk worth knowing before you go: it is reserved for greyhounds in certain time slots.

The dog setup

The run uses the perimeter fence of baseball diamond number two, so the enclosure is genuinely secure, though it is worth walking the boundary before unclipping because gate clearances can vary with the ground level. Water taps are on site, and bins and bags are provided. Outside the fence, the surrounding reserve is strictly on lead, as it borders sensitive shorebird habitat. Dogs must stay leashed on the way in and out, owners keep effective control at all times, and restricted or declared dangerous breeds are not permitted.

Worth knowing

Sutherland Shire Council reserves the space exclusively for greyhounds on Sunday and Wednesday mornings from 7am to 10am, with access in those slots restricted to members of the Greyhounds Unleashed group. Outside those windows the area is open to general off-leash use. The ground turns to mud quickly after rain, so a towel for the car saves the upholstery. Shade is sparse, and on hot days a portable water bowl earns its place in the bag.

Max: Check the gate latches before you let your dog off the lead. The double-gated entry gives you a buffer, but it still pays to look before you unclip.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Taren Point Road into Apsley Place, then to the end of the street beside the baseball fields, or through the main car park entry off Holt Road. Street parking on Apsley Place is usually easy to find. Buses run along Taren Point Road, but the walk in from the nearest stop crosses an industrial stretch, so most people drive. The park is open around the clock.

Noah's Cafe on Alexander Avenue is a short drive for a coffee afterwards, and Milkhouse Kurnell pairs well with an extended outing over the Captain Cook Bridge, where Kurnell Dog Beach gives the dogs a swim.
