Peter Rabbit Cafe

Peter Rabbit is the West End's garden cafe, hidden behind gates at 234-244 Hindley Street on the corner of Liverpool Street, where a leafy, overgrown courtyard of timber tables and umbrellas makes the middle of the CBD feel a world away. Dogs are welcome in that garden, which is the whole reason to bring yours: a proper sit-down brunch where the dog has shade, space and usually a puppuccino on the side.

The dog friendly areas are the outdoor garden courtyard and the deck seating; the indoor rooms are people only. Keep your dog leashed and beside your table, and ask for a garden table when you book because the garden fills early on weekends. The leafy cover means genuine shade through summer, and staff have a reputation for greeting canine regulars warmly, puppuccinos included. There is no pet fee.

Worth knowing

The kitchen works South Australian produce into a creative brunch list: chilli scrambled eggs, the signature Benny dishes including a Crepes Benny, smashed avocado, rotating seasonal hashes and rostis, and a sweet side of French toast and porridge. Drinks run from specialty coffee by local roasters and matcha lattes to house-made sodas, with cocktails, beers and wines for the long lunches. It is one of the most heavily reviewed cafes in the city, and the quirky touches extend to resident rabbits in the garden, which dogs generally ignore and children generally do not.

Getting there

The entrance sits off Hindley Street in the West End, an easy walk from the city centre and well served by buses along the corridor. Parking in the West End is paid on-street and in nearby stations, so weekend visitors usually walk or take the tram and bus. Doors open 7:30am on weekdays and 8am on weekends and public holidays, closing at 3pm with the kitchen finishing at 2:30pm.
