Toogoom 3.5 Beach Access

Toogoom 3.5 is a natural beach access near 389 Oregan Creek Road, at the Oregan Creek end of the Toogoom foreshore about 15 minutes north of Hervey Bay. This is the quiet end of Toogoom: soft sand, shallow water and long open stretches that suit dogs who want a proper walk rather than a busy beach scene.

Leash status

Off-leash play is allowed at this access, with dogs kept under effective control by voice command or immediate recall. The best-known all-hours off-leash zone on the Toogoom foreshore is the Shellcot Street to Ries Road section further along, and other parts of the foreshore carry timed rules instead, typically off-leash from 3pm to 8am and on-leash through the middle of the day. Fraser Coast Regional Council is also rolling out new signage and maps, with possible seasonal bird-protection zones, so check the signs on site before letting go of the lead. Clean up after your dog and carry your own bags as a backup.

Water and terrain

Vast sand flats open up at low tide, giving your dog a huge natural run. At higher tide the water comes in shallow and calm close to shore, fine for a splash. The beach is fully exposed, so bring water and shade for anything longer than a short walk, though the dune line of coastal trees casts some natural shade.

Max: plan this one around the tide. The sand flats at low tide are the whole point of the Oregan Creek end, and at high tide you are walking a much narrower beach.

Getting there and parking

The entrance sits at 389 Oregan Creek Road, reached via sandy paths through the coastal scrub. Street parking is available nearby and a small water bowl on a pedestal stands by the sandy entrance path. Facilities are otherwise limited to a signpost; this is a natural beach, not a developed park. Public transport is effectively non-existent, so drive.

Worth knowing

Because the access is raw and unsigned beyond the basics, it pays to have water, bags and shade in the car. The calm, uncrowded setting makes it a good match for nervous dogs as well as sociable ones that like open space without the chaos of a dog-beach crowd.

When to go

Weekday mornings and late afternoons are the quietest and coolest windows, and low tide gives the most room to run. Time your visit with the tide charts rather than the clock and you will get the best of this stretch.
