What visitors mention
Toogoom 08 is the access via the pathway between 54 and 56 Shellcot Street, and it marks the start of the suburb's 24-hour off-leash beach running towards Ries Road. It is a quiet, wide, flat coastal stretch, good for walking and, at low tide, hunting shells and crabs.
The rules. The off-leash zone is 24 hours from this Shellcot Street pathway through to Ries Road. Dogs must stay under effective control and respond to recall. On public streets and any non-designated beach sections, dogs must be on a leash. The Fraser Coast is updating beach rules and may add shorebird or dog-free zones, so check the signs at the access before you let go of the lead.
The water and sand. The tide here pulls out a long way, leaving up to a kilometre of firm sand flat at low tide, ideal for a long walk. It comes back in quickly, so watch the incoming tide and do not get caught out on the sandbanks.
What's there. On-street parking along Shellcot Street and a waste bin at the pathway entrance. This access has no toilets, the nearby Toogoom 09 access has facilities. There is no dog water station, so bring your own. The path is sandy and not wheelchair accessible.
Getting there. From Hervey Bay or Maryborough, take the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road to Toogoom Road, then turn onto Shellcot Street. The access is subtle, look for the public access sign between numbers 54 and 56.
Nearby with the dogs. Goody's On The Beach is a popular dog-friendly waterside spot nearby, and Salty at Toogoom (67 Moreton Street) welcomes dogs in its garden. Serenity Caravan Park on Moreton Street takes pets for a longer stay.
When to go. Weekdays are quiet, weekends and sunny mornings and evenings are busiest. Visit at low to mid tide for the most walking room, and carry water for your dog. Good for big walkers.
