Toogoom 09 Beach Access

Toogoom 09 is an access along the Toogoom foreshore, close to the Shellcot Street end of the suburb's off-leash beach. It is a relaxed, quiet, scenic spot with soft sand and gentle tidal water, popular with local walkers, families and fishers, and good for dogs that like a paddle.

The rules. The general foreshore is on-leash unless signposted otherwise. The dedicated 24-hour off-leash zone starts at the pathway between 54 and 56 Shellcot Street and runs to Ries Road, so confirm which side of the signs you are on before letting your dog off. Dogs must stay under effective control and respond to recall, waste must be bagged and binned, and dogs are not allowed in signposted or environmentally sensitive zones.

The water and sand. Highly tidal, with the water retreating a long way at low tide to leave large firm sand flats, then covering the beach at high tide. Low to mid tide gives the most space, and the incoming tide moves quickly.

What's there. Direct sandy access from the roadside and street parking along the esplanade. This access has facilities, unlike some of the smaller nearby points. Carry your own water for your dog. Major amenities are back in Hervey Bay.

Getting there. Around 15 to 20 minutes north of Hervey Bay via Pialba-Burrum Heads Road, turning into Toogoom Road, with easy street parking near Shellcot Street. Public transport is very limited.

Nearby with the dogs. Goody's On The Beach (54 Moreton Street) has covered outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, and Salty at Toogoom (67 Moreton Street) takes dogs in its garden. Several Toogoom holiday homes are pet-friendly.

When to go. Weekday mornings are quietest. Visit at low to mid tide for maximum walking space, and stay within the on and off-leash signs.
