Toogoom 04 Beach Access

Toogoom 04 is a natural beach access off Kalinda Court on the Toogoom foreshore, about 15 to 20 minutes north of Hervey Bay. The stretch here is quiet and calm, with broad sand flats at low tide and none of the crowd of the Hervey Bay beaches, which makes it a gentle option for dogs that startle easily.

Leash status

This part of the foreshore is time-restricted rather than all-hours: dogs are off-leash roughly between 3pm and 8am, and on-leash between 8am and 3pm. Even off-leash, dogs must stay under effective control and answer a voice command. Signed dog-free areas protect swimming spots and wildlife, and Fraser Coast Regional Council is adding new shorebird zones in 2026, so check the signage at the Kalinda Court entrance before you unclip. Keep dogs off the feeding shorebirds on the flats whatever the hour.

Water and terrain

At low tide the water recedes dramatically, leaving wide flat sand that is made for running and long walks. High tide is better for a dip at the shore. One caution specific to this stretch: the incoming tide returns quickly across those wide flats, so keep an eye on the water line and your dog's position while you are out.

Pepsi: the flats flood fast on the turn. Pick a landmark behind you when you walk out so you can tell how far the tide has crept up.

Getting there and parking

Head north from Hervey Bay via Booral Road or the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road, then Toogoom Road, and turn into Kalinda Court from Shellcot Street. On-street parking sits near the entrance, and a short sandy track of about 150 metres leads down to the beach. Public transport is effectively non-existent, so drive.

Worth knowing

There are no dog water points or bag dispensers here, so bring your own of both. The nearest public toilets are back at the Toogoom 08 access. The raw, undeveloped feel is part of the appeal, but it means self-sufficiency is the price.

When to go

Weekday afternoons are the quietest. Time the visit for the off-leash window and aim for a low tide inside it for maximum room, which on the right day gives you a huge stretch of firm sand with barely another set of paw prints on it.

While you're out there

The Toogoom 3.5 Beach Access at the Oregan Creek end is another quiet entry worth knowing, and Toogoom 08 Beach Access is the one with facilities. Salty at Toogoom welcomes dogs on Moreton Street, and Serenity Caravan Park is pet friendly within walking distance of the water.
