Hayes Family Wines

Hayes Family Wines is a boutique certified-organic winery at 102 Mattiske Road in Stone Well, about three kilometres west of Tanunda on the quiet western edge of the Barossa. It is a small-scale, family operation pouring shiraz, grenache, mataro and semillon with a focus on fruit purity, and it is one of the rare working wineries that lets dogs inside the cellar door.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome inside the tasting room and across the outdoor grounds, which is an uncommon combination for an active vineyard. The one rule is the leash: this is a working winery with vineyard operations and machinery, so dogs stay on lead and close, indoors and out. Water is available on request from staff.

Worth knowing

Tastings are intimate and conversational, often run by the owners themselves, and bookings are recommended to secure a dedicated spot even though walk-ins are generally accommodated. Food is limited to occasional produce pairings rather than a full menu, so plan lunch in Tanunda. Hours have been listed both as Friday to Sunday and Friday to Monday around midday to 4:30pm, so confirm current opening days before setting out.

Getting there and parking

The winery sits off Stonewell Road in a quiet vineyard setting well away from the main tourist drag, with free parking on site.
