Mr Barval Fine Wines is a family-owned cellar door beside Calgardup Brook, framed by forest and vineyard on the outskirts of Margaret River, making handcrafted old-world-style wines in small batches. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor tasting areas, which suits the setting: a slow, personal tasting on the estate grounds rather than a big commercial room. Walk-ins run Friday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm; Monday to Thursday is by appointment.

The dog setup

Well-behaved dogs join you on a lead in the outdoor areas, keeping clear of vineyard operations around the working property. Water is generally available but bring your own bowl for convenience. The grounds give a calm dog a pleasant hour beside your tasting table, and the family's pygmy goats add to the small-farm character, though the lead stays on around them.

Max: lake beside the deck, goats over the fence, and four unhurried wines while the winemaker talked us through each one. Old school in the best way.

The vibe

Owner-winemaker Rob and his wife Kellie run the place personally, and the tastings reflect it: a casual four-wine flight with local olives, or a deeper Riserva range pour. A local produce platter of cheeses and terrines pairs with the wines, and an Italian-inspired food van serves pizzas and snack plates from the kitchen garden during summer. Booked experiences can extend to a vineyard walk and a tour of the traditional winemaking setup.

Getting there and parking

The estate sits on the outskirts of Margaret River, reached by car, with parking near the cellar door. Weekday visits are appointment-only, which actually suits a dog: a private booking gives space and quiet that a busy weekend session cannot. Confirm times before you set out, as small producers keep limited hours.
