House of Cards Wine

House of Cards Wine is a family-owned, fully organic winery on Quininup Road in Yallingup, and among dog owners it is best known for its resident golden retrievers, Rafa and Tilly. It is a genuinely relaxed stop for a tasting with your own dog in tow, on the northern end of the Margaret River wine region.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor grassed areas and around the cellar door, kept on lead, and are not permitted inside the tasting room itself. Tastings work at the outdoor tables or on the lawn, so you can stay with your dog the whole time.

Bring your own water bowl, since the resident retrievers are the hosts rather than the amenities. Keep your dog leashed and settled so the greeting from Rafa and Tilly stays friendly.

The wine and the vibe

The range is single-vineyard and 100 percent organic, with a well-regarded Chenin Blanc and bold reds, and tastings cost $15 a head, redeemable on wine purchases. Small cheese platters and local produce are available, a playground keeps kids occupied, and the mood is easygoing rather than formal.

Pepsi: a lawn tasting with two friendly retrievers wandering past is about as good as a cellar door gets. Keep your own dog leashed and everyone stays relaxed.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door sits at 17/5 Quininup Road, just off Caves Road at Yallingup, with on-site parking, and Chow's Table restaurant is a few steps away. It opens 10am to 5pm daily, and a car is the practical way in from Dunsborough or Margaret River.

Close by with the dogs

Chow's Table next door is the natural lunch pairing, and Commonage Coffee Co. at Yallingup Siding covers the morning coffee run. Knotting Hill Estate further along Caves Road is the next cellar door to try, and Rivendell Winery Estate offers a vineyard stay in the same patch.
