Woronora River Bridge Loop

The Woronora River Bridge Loop crosses the high level River Road bridge on a wide wooden walkway, with long views over the Woronora River and the bushland either side, then returns through Prince Edward Park and Price Circuit Reserve. How far it runs depends on how much of the residential bends you take in, and the two published versions of the walk differ accordingly.

The walk

Sutherland Shire Council and local visitor information describe the bridge circuit as a shorter walk of about 2 to 3 km, around an hour. AllTrails logs the fuller loop, including the suburban streets and bush tracks, at 6.9 km with a moderate grade and about 1.5 to 2 hours. Both are accurate, they are just different walks. The bridge crossing itself is flat and wide and suits any fitness level, provided your dog is comfortable with heights and open water below. The bends add hills, sandstone outcrops and narrow footpaths before you come back along the water.

Leash status

This is Sutherland Shire Council land and dogs must be on lead throughout, on the bridge and through the residential streets alike. Dogs are excluded from the children's playground area at Prince Edward Park. The Royal National Park sits close by and bans dogs outright, so do not drift across the boundary while exploring.

Max: Keep the lead short on the bridge footway, it narrows when cyclists and prams come through, and watch the reserve grass for snakes in the warmer months.

Water and terrain

The river is tidal and high tide gives the best of it, particularly from the boardwalk at Price Circuit Reserve. Some of the rugged sections near the water involve rock hopping and uneven sandstone that small or less agile dogs will struggle with, so stick to the formed paths with them. The bridge is also a good sunrise spot if you are up early.

Getting there and parking

Take the Princes Highway to Sutherland, then Acacia Road onto River Road or Menai Road into Woronora. Street parking is free along Price Circuit and River Road, with small lots near the Boatshed. Park at Price Circuit Reserve for the full loop and walk up to the bridge. Sutherland is the nearest train station, but this one is really a car trip. There are public toilets at Prince Edward Park, and Price Circuit Reserve has picnic tables and a barbecue. The bridge walk is covered by security cameras and has emergency call points.

Close by with the dogs

Add the Prince Edward Park Bushwalk for more bush time, then head to Woronora Tea Rooms or Left Bower in Sutherland. For a proper off lead run, Carina Bay Dog Park at Oyster Bay is the closest option. More walks are listed under NSW trails and around Woronora.

When to go

Midweek mornings are quietest. Sunday mornings bring out walkers, cyclists and families in force. Good for seniors on the shorter circuit, and for early risers who want the sunrise off the bridge.
