Prince Edward Park Bushwalk

Prince Edward Park Bushwalk runs along the Woronora River in Woronora, mixing flat riverside walking with steep, demanding climbs through the bush, and it sits just minutes from Sutherland station side suburbia. The single reason to make the trip is a genuine workout through scenic riverside bushland with solid on-lead infrastructure.

The walk

Trails range from gentle riverside paths and a boardwalk along the water to steep bush sections where the grade bites hardest around the Forbes Creek area. No specific distance is published for the full network, so plan a moderate session rather than a quick stroll, though a relaxed riverside loop of about 3 km is the popular option. Families use the flat river end and fitness walkers use the climbs.

Leash status

On lead at all times. Sutherland Shire Council requires dogs to be leashed throughout the parkland and on the trails here, and declared dangerous or restricted breeds are not permitted. The tracks are shared with cyclists and families, so keep your dog under firm control and close at blind corners.

Max: check the tide chart before you leave. When the Woronora River runs high, the low riverside sections go under and you end up doing the steep stuff to get around it.

Hazards

Low-lying riverside paths can flood or become impassable at high tide, so a quick look at the Woronora River tide predictions saves a wet detour. The steep sections hold mud after rain, and there is no water on the track, so carry your own for both of you. Pick up after your dog straight away to keep the trail clean.

Getting there and parking

Cross the Woronora Bridge from Sutherland and turn onto Prices Circuit, then Prince Edward Park Road, with good parking along the road near the entrance at 118 Prince Edward Park Rd. Public toilets sit near the entrance, and the closest station is Sutherland, which needs a bus or a decent walk to reach the park.

Make a day of it

The Woronora River Bridge Loop shares this riverfront and makes a flatter companion walk, and the Woronora Tea Rooms Cafe by Celeste takes dogs outside for a post-walk coffee by the bridge. In Sutherland itself, Left Bower and the Royal Hotel Sutherland round out the dog-friendly stops.

When to go

Early morning keeps you ahead of both the heat on the steep sections and the weekend family crowd at the river end. After heavy rain, give the bush tracks a day to dry out.
