Jells Park and Nortons Park Loop

Jells Park is the green heart of the Dandenong Valley Parklands in Melbourne's south east: a lake, a stand of bushland and a lot of open lawn. Link it to Nortons Park next door and you get a long, varied loop of about 10.6 kilometres. The reason dog walkers pair the two parks is simple: Jells Park has no off-lead area anywhere in it, and Nortons Park does.

The dog setup

The full circuit runs 10.6 kilometres and rates moderate, roughly two and a quarter hours at a steady pace. It is not hard walking, just long. Surfaces are good throughout, sealed and compacted gravel shared with cyclists, and the Dandenong Creek Trail runs through the middle of it, so you can cut the loop short at half a dozen points and still get back to a car park. The lake circuit at Jells is the pretty stretch, wide paths and open water with bird hides where darters, pelicans, herons and cormorants turn up. The bushland sections are quieter and shadier.

Leash status

Parks Victoria allows up to four dogs per person at Jells Park, on lead at all times, across the whole park, and there is no off-lead area inside it. Dogs are excluded from the playgrounds and the signposted conservation areas. The release valve is next door: Nortons Park has a designated off-lead area where dogs must stay under effective voice control, connected by the creek trail. Clip back on before crossing into the shared paths.

Water and hazards

Jells Lake is scenery, not a swimming hole. Parks Victoria treats the lake and creek as natural water bodies with the usual hazards and there is no designated dog swimming, so bring water rather than planning on a paddle. The shared trail carries a lot of bikes, particularly weekend mornings, and some of that traffic moves fast on the 49 kilometre creek corridor. Keep the lead short on the blind corners.

Getting there and parking

The main car parks sit off Jells Road in Wheelers Hill, with toilets, picnic shelters and the playground close by. Weekend mornings fill them early, another reason to start early. The creek trail links to neighbouring suburbs, so a one-way leg between car parks is easy to arrange.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the quiet window for an on-lead walk with a reactive dog; weekend mornings are the busiest and the sunniest. Autumn through spring gives the best walking weather on the exposed lawn sections.

Nortons Park's off-lead ground is the closest run-free option, and Jells Road Reserve Dog Off Leash Area adds another on the same side of the park.
