Hertford Crescent Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Hertford Crescent Reserve is a quiet neighbourhood off-leash area in Wheelers Hill, mostly grass with a good run of mature shade trees, run by the City of Monash and open around the clock. Reviewers rate it as a calm, low-key spot rather than a busy social park, which is precisely its appeal. It is not fully fenced and opens onto a residential street, so it suits dogs with reliable recall.

Leash status

This is a designated City of Monash off-leash area, so the council conditions apply: dogs under effective voice or hand control at all times, kept in sight, and leashed until you are inside the reserve boundary and again on the way out. You need to carry a short leash, up to 1.5 metres, and the two-dogs-per-person cap applies. If your dog comes within 20 metres of children's play equipment, occupied barbecue areas or organised sport anywhere in the park, they go back on the short leash. Clean up and use the bins, and bring your own bags in case the on-site dispenser is empty.

Max: unfenced means the recall is the fence here. If your dog banks left when seagulls do, keep the lead on and save the off-leash test for an enclosed park.

Water and terrain

The ground is natural, slightly uneven grass with plenty of tree shade and bench seating for owners. There is no formal path through the reserve and lighting is minimal, so it is a daylight venue. There is no dedicated dog water point confirmed, so carry water for your dog. Facilities are modest by design: this is a local exercise patch, not a destination park.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off Hertford Crescent, with free untimed kerbside parking along the residential street and no dedicated car park. Access from Ferntree Gully Road is straightforward by car, and the nearest bus stops are on Jells Road, a five to seven minute walk.

When to go

Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quietest. The reserve is busiest on weekday afternoons after school hours and late weekend mornings, though even at peak it stays smaller and calmer than the big reserves nearby.

Close by with the dogs

For a longer session, Lum Reserve and Jells Road Reserve are both close by, and the Scotchmans Creek Trail runs through the area for an on-lead walk.
