The short version. Hertford Crescent Reserve is a quiet neighbourhood off-leash area in Wheelers Hill, mostly grass with a good run of mature shade trees. Reviewers rate it as a calm, low-key spot rather than a busy social park, which is exactly its appeal. It is not fully fenced and opens onto a residential street, so it suits dogs with reliable recall.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control at all times, on-leash until you are inside the reserve boundary and again on the way out. This is a City of Monash off-leash area, so the two-dogs-per-person cap applies and you must clean up after your dog. Bags may be provided on-site but bring your own in case the dispenser is empty.

What is there. Natural, slightly uneven grass with plenty of tree shade and bench seating for owners. There is no formal walking path and lighting is minimal, so it is best used in daylight. Facilities are modest; this is a local exercise patch, not a destination park.

Getting there. The reserve is off Hertford Crescent, with kerbside parking on the residential street. On public transport, the nearest bus stops are on Jells Road, roughly a five to seven minute walk, with easy road access from Ferntree Gully Road.

Nearby with the dogs. For a longer session, Lum Reserve and Jells Road Reserve are both close by, and the Scotchmans Creek Trail runs through the area for an on-leash walk.

When to go. Busiest on weekday afternoons and late weekend mornings; weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quietest. A good pick for a calm, unhurried run with a well-behaved dog.
