Hinkler Reserve is a popular off-leash spot in Glen Waverley with a bushland-in-suburbia feel: a figure-eight gravel track winding through trees and native planting, with open grass for off-lead time. The combination of a real walking loop, shade, and a dog-friendly regular crowd makes it one of the more rounded local options.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash 24 hours under City of Monash rules, which means effective voice or hand control and a lead carried at all times. The reserve is only partly fenced, with some edges open to surrounding streets, so keep recall sharp near the boundaries. Put your dog on-lead in the playground and the denser central wooded sections, and within 20 metres of any BBQ or play equipment in use. Bins and bag dispensers are on-site.

What's there. The gravel figure-eight loop suits walking and light exercise, with benches along the way and good tree cover for warm days. There is a drinking tap with a dog bowl, which is not a given at Monash reserves. A playground sits on-site (on-lead).

Getting there. Access is off Hinkler Road East, with street parking around the reserve that can fill at busy times. It is mostly a drive-in or walk-in from the neighbourhood; the central Glen Waverley cafe strip on Kingsway is about a five-minute drive.

With open sides to the streets, this is a check-your-recall spot before you unclip, especially if your dog drifts toward fence lines.

When to go. Late afternoon, around 5pm, is the social peak when the regulars gather. For a calmer walk, take the loop mid-morning on a weekday. Good for dogs who want a proper walk plus a bit of company.
