Nakurami Kondoli Whale Lookout

Nakurami Kondoli Whale Lookout is a small, purpose-built viewing platform on Kings Beach Road at Waitpinga, about ten minutes south of Victor Harbor. From the rail you look down over Kings Beach to West Island and the Bluff, and from June to September the water below is one of the Fleurieu's better vantages for southern right whales. The Rotary Club of Victor Harbor built it from recycled materials, and interpretation panels cover local whale history and the Nakurami Shark Dreaming story.

The dog setup

Dogs on lead are welcome at the platform. The official listing marks the lookout pet friendly with an enquire note, and in practice that means a short leash and a well-mannered dog sharing the rail with other visitors. There is no fenced area or off-leash scope here at all: the lookout sits beside Newland Head Conservation Park, where dogs are not permitted, and that boundary runs close to the access road. Keep your dog on lead the whole time and treat this as a leashed stop only.

Leash status and water

Lead required everywhere at the lookout. There is no water tap and no toilet on site, so carry water for both of you and keep the visit short unless you have packed for longer. Bins are not guaranteed either, so bring bags and plan to take them with you.

Hazards to know

The platform is safe and bench-lined, with disabled access, but the coast below is not swimming water: Parks SA warns of strong rips and hidden gutters along the Newland Head beaches, and cliff edges near the platform deserve a short leash with curious dogs. The Heysen Trail passes directly by, and sections running through the conservation park are off limits to dogs, so check signage before following it either way.

Getting there and parking

From Victor Harbor, head south on Waitpinga Road and turn onto Kings Beach Road. There is a small gravel parking area right at the entrance. No public transport serves this stretch, so a car is essential.

When to go

Midweek mornings are quietest. Weekends and the June to September whale season draw more people, so arrive early if you want the platform to yourselves, and bring binoculars for a better chance at spotting whales offshore.

Max: This is a lookout stop, not a long walk, so it is worth pairing with the Heysen Trail or a Victor Harbor dog park if your dog needs more of a leg-stretch.
