Nakurami Kondoli Whale Lookout

Nakurami Kondoli Whale Lookout is a small, purpose-built viewing platform on Kings Beach Road at Waitpinga, looking down over Kings Beach to West Island and the Bluff. It is built from recycled materials with signage on local whale history and Kaurna stories, and dogs on lead are welcome to join you at the rail.

The rules. Keep dogs on a lead on the platform itself, both for other visitors and because the lookout sits right beside Newland Head Conservation Park, where wildlife protection rules are strict. Dogs are allowed on Kings Beach below, also on leash.

What's there. The platform has benches and is disabled-accessible, with informational panels on the Nakurami Shark Dreaming story. There is no water tap or toilet on site, so bring your own water for you and the dog, along with anything else you need for a stop rather than a long stay.

Getting there. From Victor Harbor, head south on Waitpinga Road and turn onto Kings Beach Road; it is about a ten-minute drive. There is a small gravel parking area right at the entrance. No public transport runs out this way, so a car is essential, and the Heysen Trail passes directly by if you want to extend the walk.

Nearby with the dogs. Kings Beach is immediately below for a leashed coastal walk. Victor Harbor, about ten minutes north, has several cafes with dog-friendly outdoor seating for a coffee stop. Newland Head Conservation Park nearby has camping options for those extending the trip.

Mid-week mornings are the quietest. Weekends and the June to September whale season bring more visitors, so arrive early if you want the platform to yourselves, and bring binoculars for a chance at spotting southern right whales offshore.
