Whalers Seaside Dining sits on Franklin Parade in Encounter Bay with sweeping views across the bay to Wright Island, and well-behaved dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck while you eat.

The dog setup. Dogs are allowed on the outdoor deck only, not inside. They need to be on a leash the whole time and kept off chairs, tables and other furniture. Staff are friendly about it but will step in if a dog gets too comfortable on the seating or if there's any aggressive behaviour. Water is sometimes put out, but bring your own bowl to be safe, and clean up after your dog.

Known for. Fresh local seafood, seafood platters for two, and some of the best sunset views along this stretch of coast. It's a step up from a quick kiosk stop, more suited to a relaxed lunch or dinner than a fast bite.

Getting there. The restaurant is at 121 Franklin Parade, with a large free car park on-site plus free street parking nearby. It's wheelchair accessible, and the walking track along the coast runs directly opposite for a stretch of the legs before or after your meal.

Go for a late lunch or an early dinner and grab a deck table before sunset, when the light over the bay is the whole point of coming.
