South Wharf Promenade

Old cargo sheds turned into bars, the Yarra alongside and the tall ship Polly Woodside moored nearby: South Wharf Promenade is a city stroll rather than a run. Dogs are welcome, on lead the whole way.

Lead rules

The City of Melbourne requires dogs to stay on a leash in public pedestrian and dining areas, and this promenade is both. There is no off-lead section, so save the zoomies for a fenced park.

The walk

The path is flat, mixing concrete with stretches of timber boardwalk, so it is easy going for older dogs. Keep walking across Webb Bridge and you can carry on towards Docklands.

Shade is thin along the waterfront edge, with only the odd overhang. Bins are easy to find near the restaurants and entry ramps.

Pepsi: Public water is scarce on the boardwalk, but several riverside venues put bowls out. Carry a bottle anyway on warm days.

Make a day of it

For a drink with the dog afterwards, try The General Assembly. If your dog needs a proper run, Moray Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park in Southbank is fully fenced.

When to go

Paid street parking and multi-level car parks sit beside the convention centre and DFO South Wharf. Go early or late on hot days, as the waterfront is mostly open to the sun, and bring a dog that is relaxed around busy outdoor tables.
