The General Assembly

The General Assembly is a big, industrial-style waterfront pub on the South Wharf Promenade, and the reason to bring your dog is simple: the outdoor deck runs straight along the Yarra River, with shade, full table service and a steady parade of people and other dogs to watch. It sits alongside the historic Polly Woodside tall ship, a few minutes from the CBD end of the river.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the extensive outdoor seating, both the timber deck and the promenade tables, which are fully serviced. Indoor seating is generally limited to service animals, and dogs need to stay on lead at all times. Staff are accommodating and will bring water bowls on request, so you rarely need to pack your own.

Pepsi: weekday lunches are the calm version of this place. Save the deck at full tilt for when your dog is in the mood for a crowd.

The vibe

This is a bustling venue rather than a quiet local: steak sandwiches, chicken schnitzel and burgers, happy hour, spritz sessions and regular live music, with big crowds on weekend lunchtimes and AFL event days. The Sunday roast starts at 12pm and runs until it is gone. It suits socialised dogs that can settle while the room hums around them.

Getting there and parking

The most convenient parking is the undercover car park at DFO South Wharf, which gives direct flat access to the promenade. Southern Cross Station is a short walk away, as are the Flinders Street tram stops, and the riverside path from the CBD or Docklands brings you straight to the door. The pub trades from 11.30am daily, closing at 9.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday.

While you're out there

The promenade makes an easy on-lead warm-up either direction along the river, and the Port Melbourne and Albert Park loop starts close by for a longer walk. Point Park dog off-leash area at Docklands is a short stroll across the bridge if your dog needs a run before lunch.
