Roley Pools Heritage Walk Trail

The Roley Pools Heritage Walk Trail drops into the steep valley of the Canning River, Djarlgarro Beelier, in Roleystone, past granite outcrops and small cascades. It is proper Perth Hills bush, and dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Armadale requires dogs to be on a leash at all times. Quendas and native water rats live in the reserve, which is another good reason to keep them close.

The walk

Expect uneven dirt tracks, granite and dolerite rock, and steep stone staircases. The track winds through marri, wandoo and flooded gum woodland.

Peppermints, paperbarks and a tall canopy along the banks keep much of it shaded. Seasonal rock pools and the river let dogs wade, but bring drinking water, since taps and bowls are sparse.

Getting started

Three parking areas serve the trails: Soldiers Road near the bridge, The Cascades car park on Thompson Road, and limited roadside spots on Collins Road. Bins are around the main picnic and parking areas, so carry bags back to the car.

Max: Those stone stairs are steep. Take them slowly with a big dog, and keep a hand free for the rocks.

For off-lead time afterwards, Harber Fenced Dog Park in Armadale has separate areas for large and small dogs.

The shade makes it a good warm-weather walk, but the stairs and rough ground suit fit, sure-footed dogs more than older ones.
