Contour Channel Walk

An easy-to-moderate out-and-back walk in Banyowla Regional Park at Roleystone, following a 1930s concrete water channel through jarrah-marri forest. Dogs are welcome on lead, and the flat channel line makes it one of the more relaxed hills walks for a leashed dog.

The walk. The trail traces the historical Contour Channel between Croyden Road and the Canning River, on loose gravel paths. The channel keeps the gradient gentle, so it walks easier than the surrounding scarp. Expect Perth Hills and Darling Scarp views, and wildflowers from roughly August to November.

Leash status. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on lead at all times. Pack out your rubbish and pick up after your dog, as this is a native bushland reserve.

Water and amenities. There are no toilets and no drinking water at the trail. Carry all the water your dog needs, especially in warmer months.

Getting there. The trail is about 30km from Perth CBD via Roleystone. Parking is limited to small dirt pull-outs on the roadside near entry points such as the end of Croyden Road and along Canning Mills Road, so take care of passing traffic when you get out. Public transport does not reach the trailhead; drive.

Nearby with the dogs. Roleystone village has dog-friendly cafes with outdoor seating for afterwards, and the wider Perth Hills has more on-lead reserve trails.

When to go. Early mornings or late weekday afternoons are quietest; Sunday mornings are busiest. August to November is best for wildflowers. Good for owners after a gentle-gradient bush walk with a leashed dog.
