Avocados Bar & Cafe sits on the Canning River in Kelmscott, in Perth's southeastern foothills, pairing a riverside bar and restaurant with chalet accommodation across the grounds. A number of designated chalets are set aside for guests travelling with a dog, which makes it one of the few spots in the area where dinner and an overnight stay happen in the same stop.

Dog stays are limited to specific pet friendly chalets, so you need to flag that you are bringing a dog at the time of booking. One dog per room, and a one-off $50 pet fee is payable directly at check-in. The house rules are clear: dogs stay off the furniture, use their own bedding, and remain on lead outside the room because of other guests and the on-site restaurant. You are also responsible for picking up after your dog and using the external bins.

Only a handful of rooms carry the pet friendly designation, so confirm one is available for your dates before you pay for anything else.

The vibe

The setting is the draw. The grounds run down to the Canning River with outdoor and riverside seating, live music on scheduled nights, and a menu of pub favourites: steak sandwiches, chicken parmi, lamb shank and fish and chips. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served on site, so it works both as a meal stop and as a base for the night.

Getting there and parking

The address is 2 Mount Street in central Kelmscott, an easy turn-off from Albany Highway with free parking on site. Perth's CBD is an easy drive north, and Kelmscott station on the Armadale line is close by if you are coming up by train.

While you're out there

For an off lead run, the John Dunn Memorial Park fenced dog park is a short drive away. Dome Cafe Kelmscott is handy for morning coffee, and if the chalets are booked out, Kelmscott Caravan Park is another local option that takes dogs.
