Oatley Park

A large bushland reserve on a peninsula in the Georges River, with roughly 6 km of tracks and shoreline inside it. The walking is easy and the setting is closer to bush than park, which is the appeal in this part of southern Sydney. Georges River Council keeps dogs on lead throughout.

The walk. Around 6 km if you link the tracks and the foreshore, graded easy, and about an hour and a half at a relaxed pace. The mix is what makes it: sealed park road, dirt bush track and waterfront. You can shape it into whatever length suits rather than committing to a set circuit, which works well for a dog who sets the pace.

The rules. On lead. Georges River Council requires dogs to be on lead at all times outside a designated off leash area, and to stay 10 metres clear of playgrounds and barbecue areas. There is a further rule that matters in bushland like this: in reserves declared Wildlife Protection Areas, dogs on lead are permitted on formed tracks, pathways and roads only, not off into the bush. Treat the formed tracks as your boundary and you are right either way.

Water. Bring drinking water. The river sits at the bottom of the park and the foreshore is pleasant walking, but this is tidal river frontage rather than a swimming beach, so carry what you need rather than counting on it.

Getting there. Vehicle access is off Kyle Parade through a gate locked outside daylight hours, so check the time before you drive in. Council lists barbecues, picnic tables, toilets and play equipment in the park. Oatley Station on the T4 line is about a fifteen to twenty minute walk away.

Nearby with the dogs. Tidz Across The Park and The Hungry Spoon Cafe are both in the village a short drive from the park, and f'coffee at Mortdale is the next one over.

When to go. Weekday mornings. Weekends and sunny public holidays draw crowds to the picnic grounds and fill the car park, though the bush tracks stay quiet even then. Shade is decent through the middle of the day, which makes this a better summer option than most. Good for seniors, and for dogs who would rather sniff than sprint.
