Mary2Bay Rail Trail

The Mary2Bay Rail Trail is the shared-use path following the old rail corridor between Hervey Bay and Maryborough, and the Nikenbah section is its sweet spot for dog owners: flat, easy underfoot, and passing a cafe with its own gate straight onto the trail. Dogs are welcome the whole way, on lead at all times.

Leash status

This is an on-lead trail, no off-leash sections along the route. It is genuinely shared, so keep left, give way to cyclists and horses, and keep your dog close where the path narrows. Bins appear at some of the major intersections but not everywhere, so carry your own bags. Urraween's fenced dog park and the Hervey Bay off-leash beaches are the places for off-lead time, before or after the trail walk.

Water and terrain

The surface from Urangan Pier through Pialba to Nikenbah is flat, high-quality sealed bitumen, roughly 14 to 18 kilometres of it, easy for strollers, bikes and older dogs alike. Beyond Nikenbah toward Maryborough it changes character, turning to rougher packed gravel and sandy bush track, which is harder on paws and better for shorter out-and-backs. Benches appear at intervals and wayfinding signage marks the route, though a few intersections, King Street among them, are reportedly easy to miss. There is no reliable water source on the trail itself, so bring a bottle and a bowl.

Max: start early or go late. The corridor has almost no shade and the sealed surface holds heat well into the afternoon, which is hard on paws and worse for short-coated breeds.

Getting there and parking

The most convenient trailhead for a dog walk is The Depot Espresso Bar on Doolong Road in Nikenbah, which has direct access from the trail through its own gate, plus parking. Street parking around Nikenbah works too, and there are car parks at the Pialba and Urangan ends if you would rather start from the bay side. Maryborough's end anchors the opposite trailhead if you are coming from the Fraser Coast interior.

Worth knowing

The trail turns muddy after heavy rain, so check conditions if it has been wet. Weekday mornings are the quietest window before the cyclists and weekend walkers arrive. Distance is whatever you want it to be, since the corridor is flat and continuous in both directions, but heat is the real limiter: the exposed midday stretches in summer suit neither you nor a thick-coated dog.
