Mary2Bay Rail Trail

The Mary2Bay Rail Trail is the shared-use path linking Maryborough to Hervey Bay, flat and mostly gravel or sealed the whole way, and it runs right past a cafe with its own trail gate in Nikenbah, which makes this one of the easiest long leash walks on the Fraser Coast.

The rules. Dogs are welcome but must be on leash at all times. Clean up after your dog, bins are provided at some major intersections but not everywhere. Keep to the left and give way to cyclists and horses, this is a genuinely shared trail.

The walk. Mostly flat, a mix of gravel and sealed surface, suitable for a stroller or a bike as much as a dog walk. It links Nikenbah through to Pialba and Urangan one way and toward Maryborough the other, so you can go as short or as long as your dog wants.

What's there. Some benches along the way, and wayfinding signage, though a few intersections such as King Street are reportedly easy to miss. There is no reliable water source on the trail itself, so bring your own bowl and bottle.

Getting there. Park near The Depot Espresso Bar on Doolong Road in Nikenbah for direct trail access via the cafe gate, or use street parking in the surrounding area. The Pialba and Maryborough ends also have parking if you would rather start from those points.

Watch-outs. The trail can turn muddy after heavy rain, check conditions if it has been wet. There is little shade along most of the route, so avoid the middle of the day in summer.

Nearby with the dogs. The Depot Espresso Bar sits right on the trail in Nikenbah with a gate straight from the path, an easy coffee stop before or after the walk.

Weekday mornings are quietest, before cyclists and weekend walkers arrive. Good for dogs that handle distance and heat sensibly, less suited to short-coated or brachycephalic breeds on the exposed midday stretches.
