The Depot Espresso Bar

The Depot Espresso Bar is set in a converted heritage building in Nikenbah, on the Hervey Bay side of the Fraser Coast, and it sits right where the Mary to Bay Rail Trail passes through. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor verandah with genuine warmth rather than grudging tolerance, and the trail gate at the cafe makes it a natural mid-walk stop.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the covered verandah and the umbrella-shaded garden seating, on leash. Water bowls are typically put out for visiting dogs, though on quiet mornings it is worth asking when you order and they will bring one over. Indoors stays dog-free, so plan on the outdoor tables if you are bringing a dog.

The menu

Coffee is specialty single-origin and batch brew, with iced chai a warm-day regular. The cabinet is the real draw: the carrot cake has a local reputation as among the best in the Hervey Bay region, and homemade sausage rolls, vanilla slice, zucchini slice and sponge cakes rotate through alongside fresh sandwiches, breakfast wraps and toasties, with some gluten-free and vegan options.

Worth knowing

Hours run 6am to 1pm weekdays and 7am to 12:30pm Saturday, closed Sunday. Free off-street parking is on site, and if you are walking the rail trail there is gate access straight into the cafe. Confirm current hours before a special trip, as cafe hours here have shifted before.

Close by with the dogs

The Mary to Bay Rail Trail runs right past the door, a flat, on-leash stretch that suits dogs of any fitness level. For an off-lead run, the Hervey Bay foreshore has designated off-leash beach zones at Scarness and Urangan under Fraser Coast Regional Council rules, a short drive east.
