24/7 Off-leash Dog Beach

Urangan's 24/7 Off-leash Dog Beach sits on the Hervey Bay foreshore where the sand runs out into wide, flat tidal shallows, and under Fraser Coast Regional Council's current rules the main Urangan foreshore zone from the Margaret Street groyne to Dayman Park is off-leash around the clock, every day of the year. That makes it one of the most flexible dog beaches in Queensland: no time windows to work around, just tides to pick.

The rules

Off-leash still means under effective control, so a reliable recall is non-negotiable with swimmers, kids and other dogs sharing the foreshore. Zone boundaries are marked by landmarks rather than fences, so read the signs at the beach access points before letting your dog go.

Two boundaries matter. The stretch from Reef World straight to the Urangan Marina is completely dog free, and the quieter zone between Moolyyir Creek and Pulgul Creek, south of the marina, is off-limits to dogs from 1 September to 31 March while migratory shorebirds rest on the flats, reopening for all-day off-leash from 1 April to 31 August. The water

Hervey Bay is calm by Australian beach standards, with minimal surf and gentle shallows that suit waders and paddlers rather than strong swimmers. At low tide the flats stretch a long way out and warm in the sun, which is why locals time visits for a run across the sandbars.

Max: bring your own water and a towel for the car. The bay water is fine for a splash, but I never let my dog drink from the tidal pools, and that Hervey Bay sand gets everywhere.

What's there

There is a car park at the access point, and the Urangan foreshore behind the beach has grass, paths and shade trees for a warm-down walk. The famous Urangan Pier is a short stroll away for a leashed photo stop, since dogs are not allowed on the pier itself.

Getting there

The beach runs along the Urangan foreshore at the southern end of Hervey Bay, roughly a ten minute drive from Pialba along the Esplanade, which connects the whole bay side. Parking is at the beach access points off the Esplanade, and it fills on weekend mornings in holiday season.

Watch-outs

Sun is the main one: the flats offer almost no shade, so go early and pack water for both of you. Check tide times before you set out, because a high tide trims the usable sand back considerably, and keep an eye out for fishing lines and hooks near the groynes.

When to go

Early mornings are the best combination of cool air, low crowds and long tides, and sunset draws a friendly local crowd. If you want a change of scene, the Urangan Public dog park gives you a fenced option nearby, and Salt Cafe Urangan covers the coffee stop.
