The Urangan off-leash dog beach runs along the foreshore between the Margaret Street groyne and Dayman Park, near Reef World, and it is open 24 hours, seven days a week. The draw is the tidal flats: at low tide the water pulls back to leave a vast expanse of firm sand for walking and swimming, which is exactly why locals rate it.
The rules. Off-leash here still means under effective control, so your dog needs reliable recall. Boundaries are signed on site, and you must keep to the designated stretch. Dogs go back on lead in the neighbouring non-designated areas and are not permitted near the Urangan marina. Dogs must be registered with Fraser Coast Regional Council and up to date with vaccinations. Clean up after your dog; some sections have bag dispensers but bring your own to be safe.
The water and sand. This is a tidal-flat beach, not surf. Low tide opens up huge sandflats and shallow water for swimming; high tide shrinks the usable beach and pushes dogs closer together. The tide moves in quickly across the flats, so keep an eye on the water and on your dog. A quieter alternative is the Moolyyir Creek to Pulgul Creek stretch south of the marina.
What is there. Free parking sits near Dayman Park and along the Esplanade, with direct beach access. There are waste bins, though shade on the sand itself is limited, so bring water and your own bowl on warm days.
Getting there. The beach centres on the Esplanade around opposite 518 Esplanade. From central Hervey Bay, head south along the Esplanade towards the Urangan Pier. Local buses run along the Esplanade.
Nearby with the dogs. Dog-friendly outdoor seating is close by at Salt Cafe Urangan and Pier Village Cafe, both a short walk along the foreshore.

When to go. Mid-week mornings and evenings are quietest; Saturday and Sunday mornings are busiest. Time your visit around low tide for the most room. Good for big runners who want space to stretch out.
