Salt Cafe Urangan

Salt Cafe Urangan sits on the ground floor of the Oceans Resort and Spa at 569 Charlton Esplanade, looking straight out over Hervey Bay toward the Urangan Pier. It is a busy all-day breakfast and lunch cafe with a licensed bar, and the verandah and outdoor tables are where dogs go.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the verandah and outdoor seating, not inside, and the cafe puts out water bowls - unusual for a venue this busy. Keep your dog on lead and tucked in beside your table so the walkway along the resort frontage stays clear. Weekend mid-mornings are the peak, so a table on the earlier side of the day is the easier landing for a dog that needs space.

The menu

Service runs 7am to 2.30pm daily, with breakfast until 11am, lunch from noon to 2pm, and coffee and cakes through to close. Breakfast signatures include the king prawn omelette, corn fritters and smashed avocado; lunch leans properly coastal with a seafood tasting plate of grilled scallops, king prawns and harissa calamari, prawn and calamari pita pockets, prawn chilli fettuccine and a rotating catch of the day, plus burgers and pasta for the non-seafood camp. The venue is fully licensed for beer, wine and spirits.

Getting there and parking

The cafe fronts the Charlton Esplanade at Urangan, with free undercover parking entered via Hibiscus Street under the resort entrance and stairs up to the cafe level on either side. Street parking along the Esplanade covers overflow, and the whole precinct sits at the southern end of Hervey Bay's beachside strip.

While you are out there

The foreshore track runs straight past the cafe, and dogs are barred from the pier itself, so plan the walk along the water instead. Under Fraser Coast Regional Council rules the beach stretch from the Margaret Street groyne to Dayman Park is off-leash all day, every day - that is the Urangan off-leash dog beach a short walk from the cafe - and the Urangan Public Dog Park covers the land-based run.
