Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Trail Bushland Park

The Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Trail Bushland Park follows the old tramway route that once hauled timber and produce between Buderim and Palmwoods, through shaded subtropical bush at Mons on the Sunshine Coast. The gravel path runs roughly two kilometres each way, about four kilometres return, with historical plaques marking the route. It is an easy, mostly flat walk that suits dogs and owners after a quiet leg-stretcher rather than a climb.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome on the trail on a lead at all times; this is a bushland reserve, not an off-leash area. Sunshine Coast Council reviews its rules for reserves and environment areas, so check the signage at the trailhead before setting off and bin any waste along the way. A leashed dog is exactly what the plaques-and-ferns pace here calls for anyway.

Water and terrain

The surface is compacted gravel with a gentle gradient and a wheelchair-friendly ramp at the start, and benches appear at intervals for a breather. Canopy shade covers much of the route, though some sections catch full sun. There are no toilets or water taps on the trail, so carry water for two and a bowl for the dog. The car park at the trailhead is a small grassed area, nothing more.

Hazards

Bushland on the Sunshine Coast means paralysis ticks, so give your dog a thorough once-over after the walk, especially around the ears, paws and under the collar, and make sure their tick prevention is current. Snakes are a warm-season possibility in any reserve like this; a dog on a short lead stays out of trouble. After rain, expect soft patches on the gravel.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead and small parking area sit at the corner of Mons Road and Telco Road at Mons. There is no public transport stop at the trailhead, so drive in; the car park is modest and fills early on weekend mornings. The trail is around ten minutes from both Sippy Downs and Buderim village.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon beats the Queensland heat and the sun-exposed sections. It stays quieter than the better-known Tramway Walk section nearby, and the shade and interpretive plaques make it a good slow walk for older dogs who still enjoy a sniffari.
