Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk

The Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk follows the cutting of the old tramway from Mons, 2 km each way through shaded sub-tropical forest, and it is one of the Sunshine Coast hinterland's easiest on-lead walks.

The walk. The route runs along the old tramway alignment with a gentle, consistent grade that most dogs and most humans will barely notice, 4 km there and back. The forest keeps it well shaded, tramway cuttings and interpretive signs mark the history as you go, and an hour to an hour and a half covers it comfortably.

The rules. Sunshine Coast Council manages the walk and dogs must stay on lead the whole way. This is koala habitat, which is the real reason the lead matters, and the trail is for walkers only, no bikes and no horses. One thing to know: the council brought in new dog rules for its environment reserves and bushland on 3 July 2026, so treat the signs at the trailhead as the current word on where dogs can and cannot go.

Parking. The trailhead is at the corner of Mons Road and Telco Road at Mons, with a small free gravel parking area immediately on your left as you turn into Telco Road. Spaces are limited, which is another argument for an early start.

Make a day of it. Buderim village is up the hill: John Kyle Espresso for coffee, and Elizabeth Daniels Park Fenced Dog Park if the dog wants an off-lead run after all that good behaviour. Staying over, Winston Cottage at Palmwoods keeps you at the tramway's other end.

When to go. The shade makes this one of the few hinterland walks that stays pleasant on a warm morning, though summer humidity is still summer humidity. Go early in summer, both for the dog and for a parking spot, and keep an eye on the trailhead signage while the new dog rules settle in.
