The Spit via Federation Trail

The Federation Trail runs the length of the Spit at Main Beach, a flat 8.2km route through coastal dune scrub between Philip Park near Sea World and the Gold Coast Seaway. The deciding fact for dog owners is the split: the trail itself is on lead, and the beach alongside it is not.

The walk

Easy grade, around an hour and a half, on a sheltered path through the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve with the ocean on one side and the Broadwater on the other. The shade is the draw: most Gold Coast dog walking happens on open sand, and this is one of the few local routes that covers real distance under trees.

Leash status

Dogs must be on leash on the trail and in the parking areas, and they are prohibited in all children's playground areas under City of Gold Coast rules. The off-leash area is the beach adjacent to the reserve, accessed between the kiosk and the sand bypass pumping jetty, with alternative access along the Seaway breakwall.

One buffer catches people out: dogs are not permitted within 200 metres of flagged areas, so give the patrolled section a wide berth rather than walking the waterline past it.

Max: two hundred metres is further than it looks on open sand. Work out where the flags are before you unclip, not after a lifeguard has walked over.

Water and hazards

Doug Jennings Park has beach showers with dog bowls, drinking fountains, two public toilet blocks and picnic shelters, so water is sorted. The Broadwater side is calmer than the ocean beach for a paddler, and the Seaway runs a serious current best left alone.

Pepsi: keep the swimming to the sheltered Broadwater edge and let the ocean beach be a running beach.

Getting there and when to go

Drive to the northern end of Seaworld Drive at Main Beach. Free hardstand parking sits throughout Doug Jennings Park, though the gates close overnight and the lots fill by 9am on sunny weekends, so arrive early. Early mornings suit the route best, before the heat and the weekend crowds.

Close by with the dogs

For the post-walk coffee, The Winey Cow and Thyme Cafe Bar are the Main Beach options, and Broadwater Cafe sits over the bridge at Southport.
