The Spit via Federation Trail

The Federation Trail runs the length of the Spit at Main Beach, a flat 8.2 km through coastal dune scrub between Philip Park near Sea World and the Seaway, and the deciding fact is the split: the trail is on lead, the beach alongside it is not.

The walk. Easy grade, around an hour and a half, on a sheltered path through the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve with the ocean on one side and the Broadwater on the other. The shade is the point. Most Gold Coast dog walking happens on open sand, and this is one of the few local routes where you can cover real distance under trees.

The rules. City of Gold Coast manages the reserve and the split is clean. On the trail and in the parking areas, dogs must be walked on leash, and they are prohibited in all children's playground areas. The off leash exercise area is the beach adjacent to the reserve, with access between the kiosk and the sand bypass pumping jetty, and alternative access along the Seaway breakwall. One buffer catches people out: dogs are not permitted within 200 metres of flagged areas, so give the patrolled section a wide berth rather than walking the waterline past it.

Water. Good here. Doug Jennings Park has beach showers and drinking fountains with dog bowls, two public toilet blocks, one near the kiosk and one along Moondarewa Spit, and picnic shelters if you want to make a morning of it. The Broadwater side is calmer than the ocean beach if your dog is a paddler rather than a swimmer.

Getting there. Drive to the northern end of Seaworld Drive. There are two car parks, Doug Jennings Park and Philip Park, and the main one fills by mid morning on sunny weekends. The G:link tram runs to Main Beach station with a bus connection up the Spit. Check current beach conditions before you commit, because erosion and sand scarps from Tropical Cyclone Alfred have affected beach access at the northern end.

Nearby with the dogs. The Winey Cow runs a dog menu and outdoor seating a few minutes back down Seaworld Drive, and Thyme Cafe and Bar is the other Main Beach option. For a fenced run, Musgrave Park at Southport and Moreton Park at Labrador are both close.

When to go. Early morning, year round. Gold Coast sand gets hot enough to hurt paws from mid morning in summer, and the shaded trail is the answer when it does. Weekday mornings give you the beach almost to yourself. Good for big runners, and for nervous swimmers who want calm water on the Broadwater side.
