The Spit Dog Beach

The Spit Dog Beach sits at the northern end of Seaworld Drive near the Gold Coast Seaway, and it is the city's most popular off-leash beach for good reason. Open surf runs along the southern stretch while the water near the seaway stays calmer and sheltered, so you can match the conditions to your dog rather than the other way around.

Leash status

Off-leash is permitted around the clock within the clearly signed zone on the sand, which is generous compared with the time-restricted windows at many Gold Coast dog areas. Dogs must be on-lead in the car parks, on the walkways and in the adjacent parklands, and you need to carry a leash at all times. Even off-lead, the City of Gold Coast expects your dog under effective control: responsive to you, friendly with others and clear of the flagged patrolled swim zones.

Water

The southern end takes the full ocean surf, while the northern end near the seaway pipeline offers flat, sheltered water that suits hesitant swimmers and older dogs. Low tide leaves the widest, firmest sand for running, and fresh water taps sit near the entrance for rinsing and refilling bowls.

Hazards

The current around the seaway and the main jetty can be strong, so keep a close eye on any dog swimming at that end and steer learners to the calm side. Stay inside the signed boundary, as rangers do patrol and fines apply, and keep clear of the dune protection zones.

Max: save the swimming for the calmer seaway end. The pull near the jetty is no place for a dog that is still learning the water.

Facilities and parking

A large free car park sits at the entrance, with public toilets, outdoor showers, picnic tables and bins for waste, though bringing your own poo bags is still wise. The kiosk near the seaway covers coffee and food, and it is a short drive from the cafes along Main Beach if you want to extend the morning.

When to go

Weekday mornings give you the most room to move; weekend mornings draw a crowd of regulars and the car park fills fast, so arrive before 8am or shift to late afternoon. Summer calls for early starts so the sand is cool underfoot.
