Daark Espresso

Daark Espresso is the specialty coffee and brunch anchor of the Chirn Park precinct at 41 Musgrave Avenue, Labrador, and it has built its local following partly on how well it treats dogs. The wrap-around outdoor deck is the dog zone: shaded, roomy and set up so you can actually linger rather than wolf down a flat white standing up.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck, and there is a walk-up ordering window so nobody has to be tied up and left alone while you pay. Water bowls are usually out and the oversized puppuccino is close to a house signature, but bring your own bowl as backup on a packed weekend. The indoor room is humans only under standard Queensland food rules, so aim for a deck table with space for your dog to settle.

Worth knowing

This is a busy, buzzing neighbourhood room rather than a quiet side-street cafe, so a dog that settles under the table does much better than one that wants to greet every arrival. The menu is the reason the deck fills up: Cinnabon-inspired French toast, spanner crab eggs benedict with nori hollandaise, and southern fried chicken with waffles. It trades early, opening at 5:30am and closing mid-afternoon every day, which makes the deck a natural first stop after a sunrise walk.

Getting there and parking

Set your navigation for Musgrave Avenue in Labrador. Parking is kerbside along Musgrave Avenue and the surrounding side streets, and it tightens up through weekend brunch hours, so either arrive early or be prepared to walk a block. The precinct is an easy wander from most of Chirn Park.

Close by with the dogs

For an off-lead run before or after breakfast, the Musgrave Offleash Agility Dog Park sits just up the road, and the The Spit Dog Beach is a short drive north for a water finish. If the deck is full, Cruize Espresso on the same strip is another outdoor-friendly coffee option.
