Musgrave Park Dog Off Leash Area on Musgrave Avenue gives Southport dogs a fenced, shaded patch of green with basic agility gear, next to a lake edge that stays strictly on-leash. It is a local, community park rather than a destination, but the fencing and the tree cover make it a reliable daily option.

The dog setup

The designated off-leash enclosure is fully fenced, with agility equipment for training play and good shade from mature trees. Dogs run free inside under effective voice control, and you must carry a leash at all times.

The children's playground and the area around Musgrave Park Lake are on-leash only, with signage at the water. Clean up after your dog using the bins and bag dispensers provided, and leash and remove any dog showing aggression.

Worth knowing

Drinking fountains have taps low enough for dogs, and owners get public toilets, picnic shelters, barbecues and tables, so it suits a longer stop rather than a quick let-out. The ground can turn muddy after heavy rain.

Max: the lake edge is on-leash for a reason. Clip the lead back on before you wander over, because the open water and the off-leash zone sit right next to each other.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Musgrave Avenue near its corner with Kumbari Avenue, easily reached from the Gold Coast Highway. There is on-site parking with a dedicated entry off Musgrave Avenue, plus street parking on the surrounding blocks, and bus stops along Musgrave Avenue if you are coming without a car.

5B2F Bakehouse in nearby Chirn Park is an easy coffee stop after a run, as is Leisas Cafe and Broadwater Cafe for covered outdoor seating.

When to go

Quietest mid-morning and mid-afternoon on weekdays. The 7-9am and 4-6pm weekday peaks and Saturday mornings draw the agility crowd, so timid dogs are better off avoiding the Saturday rush.
