Molonglo River Reserve

Molonglo River Reserve follows the river through the Molonglo Valley near Coombs, Whitlam and Denman Prospect, not Fyshwick. Dogs are allowed in part of it only, on lead and on management trails.

Where dogs can walk

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service allows dogs on lead on the management trails in the eastern, upstream section of the reserve.

Dogs are prohibited in the downstream western section, including the former Kama area and Namarag. Check the signs at your access point before you set off.

The walk

Most of the walking is on gravel management trails and dirt tracks, with concrete paths linking in from the suburbs. River she-oaks line the water, and the open box-gum woodland is home to eastern grey kangaroos.

Max: Kangaroos are common along the corridor. Keep the lead short and your dog close when you spot them.

Bring everything

There is no drinking water and there are no bins. Carry water for you and your dog, and take every bag home.

Shade varies, with she-oak cover in places and long open stretches on the trails. Parking depends on the access point and is often informal.

Cooler days suit it best, given the open trails and lack of water. It rewards calm dogs that are happy on a lead for a longer nature walk.
