Coombs Peninsula

Coombs Peninsula is a set of river-edge paths in Canberra's Molonglo Valley, where the suburb of Coombs meets a bend in the Molonglo River. It is on lead throughout, with long views toward the National Arboretum.

Lead rules

The ACT Government manages the peninsula as part of the Molonglo River corridor. Dogs must be on a lead at all times, and within the river reserve they need to stay on the formed tracks.

The walk

Paths are sealed and well graded, with some gravel, so it is smooth going for an everyday walk. You look over the winding river and patches of box-gum grassy woodland.

Shade is limited out on the river loops. The younger trees near the houses give some cover, but hot afternoons are hard work here.

Getting started

Park near the Coombs shops or on the streets beside the entry paths. Bins sit along the shared paths near the access points, but carry water for the dog.

Make a day of it

For a bigger outing, Stromlo Forest Park has long on-lead gravel trails, and the fenced Weston Creek Dog Park is there for an off-lead run.

Early mornings and cool evenings suit it best, given how little shade the river loops have. The smooth paths make it an easy choice for older dogs.
