Wright Forrest Bushland Area

Wright Forrest Bushland Area sits above Wattle Creek Valley in Cockatoo, in the Dandenong Ranges roughly 45km east of Melbourne. Tall gums, ferny gullies and a network of tracks make this a popular bushland walk, but the deciding fact for dog owners is simple: leashed dogs are only permitted on the named management vehicle tracks, not on the narrower walking paths that branch off through the reserve.

The walk. The full loop runs about 4.2km and is rated moderate, roughly 60-90 minutes depending on pace. Terrain ranges from flat, wide stretches to steep sections, so expect a real climb in parts despite the canopy shade. Some walkers detour to the fairy doors tucked along certain tracks, or pause where the trail opens to views of the Puffing Billy Railway trestle bridge.

The rules. This reserve falls within the Yellingbo / Liwik Barring Landscape Conservation Area, managed by Parks Victoria. Dogs on lead are permitted only on the management vehicle tracks: Hakea, Olearia, Moola and Grass Tree. Dogs are not permitted on the other walking tracks through the bushland. Stick to those four named tracks and keep dogs leashed throughout. There are no bins on site, so carry bags in and take all waste back out with you.

Water. There is no drinking water and no toilets on site, so bring enough for yourself and your dog, especially since some sections climb steeply with little shade once you're clear of the canopy.

Getting there. By car from Emerald, take Belgrave-Gembrook Road (C412) and turn into Wright Road. From Cockatoo, Bailey Road gets you there. Parking is limited to small areas opposite 37 Bailey Road on the east side and near the old Wright Railway Station site on the west side. Puffing Billy's Emerald Lake Park station is a walk away via connecting trails, worth knowing for orientation, though it's a tourist steam railway rather than a transport option.

Nearby with the dogs. For off-leash time, the Alma Treloar Reserve Dog Off Leash Area in Cockatoo is close by. For more walking, try the Cockatoo to Gembrook Trail or the Emerald to Cockatoo Trail. Afterwards, the Paperbark Cafe in Mount Evelyn has a dog-friendly outdoor area, about 20 minutes' drive away.

When to go. Spring brings wildflowers through the understorey, and the canopy offers welcome shade on hot days, though the steep sections are best tackled before the heat sets in. Good for seniors keen on birdlife, with parrots and rosellas common along the vehicle tracks, less so for big runners wanting an unbroken off-lead loop.
