Milne Hill Reservoir

Milne Hill Reserve sits on Hamilton Road in Chermside West, part of the wider Chermside Hills Reserves network. The drawcard is the open, grassy hilltop with genuine views over the Brisbane city skyline, ringed by walking trails through wooded terrain that connect into the bigger reserve system.

Leash status

The rules split in two. The open hilltop grass is the designated off-lead space, unfenced and shared with other dogs, so it suits dogs with a reliable recall. The moment you drop into the surrounding Chermside Hills tracks, dogs must be back on lead: the bushland is managed for wildlife habitat, with wallabies, goannas and gliders in residence, and council is strict about it. Waste bags and bins are provided on-site and picking up is expected.

Pepsi: sunset is when this hill turns social and the summit gets busy and windy. A weekday morning lap is calmer and the view is just as good.

Water and terrain

The hilltop is exposed and largely shadeless, so bring extra water even though there is a fountain at the base that serves people and dogs. The bushland trails get steep in sections with some tight, narrow paths, so a dog that tends to wander is safer on a short lead well before the signage insists on it.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Hamilton Road, Chermside West, with a small carpark at the reserve. TransLink buses run along Hamilton Road near Trouts Road, leaving a short walk in. The carpark fills quickly around sunset, though street parking on nearby streets is usually available as a backup.

When to go

Warm weekend evenings are the peak: the hill becomes a genuine local hub and the summit crowd can feel dense if your dog prefers space. Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quieter, and the skyline view is arguably sharper in the clear morning light. Check on-site signage as reserve-specific rules do get updated.

Close by with the dogs
