Gardiners Creek Trail

Gardiners Creek Trail runs almost 20 kilometres of sealed shared path through Blackburn's creeklands, linking Blacks Walk, Kalang Park and Furness Park before joining the Main Yarra Trail. The deciding fact for dog owners: leads are compulsory the entire way, and a few pockets along the route are off-limits to dogs altogether.

The walk. This is a one-way, 19.6 km stretch rated moderate on AllTrails, mostly flat and fully sealed, running roughly 4.5 to 5 hours end to end. It suits prams and bikes as much as walkers, and most people treat it as an out-and-back rather than covering the full distance in one go.

The rules. Dogs are welcome on lead throughout the Blackburn Creeklands section, confirmed with the City of Whitehorse and the adjoining councils the trail passes through. Leads must not exceed 1.5 metres, with dogs under effective control at all times. Wetlands and sanctuary zones, including Bellbird Dell Reserve, Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and specific protected pockets of Kalang Park, are closed to dogs to protect wildlife. A separate off-leash area exists at Gardiners Creek Reserve further along, in the Burwood and Box Hill South stretch, well outside this Blackburn leg.

Water. Poo bag dispensers and water taps exist along the broader trail, but they're concentrated near the Gardiners Creek Reserve off-leash area, not this Blackburn stretch. Carry your own water and bags for the Blacks Walk to Kalang Park section.

Getting there. The trail starts near Blackburn Road, north of Heath Street. Free three-hour parking is at Pakenham Street and the Gardiners Creek Reserve car park. Blackburn Station is a short walk from the northern end, and several bus routes service Blackburn Road and Middleborough Road near trail entrances.

Nearby with the dogs. The Blackburn Lake - Whitehorse Heritage Trail makes a good add-on for a longer day out. The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary sits right beside the creeklands but is not a dog stop, it's a protected wetland where dogs aren't permitted, so treat it as a boundary marker rather than a destination.

When to go. May to September gives the most comfortable walking temperatures. Weekend mornings between 9 and 11am get busy, partly thanks to local parkrun crowds, so the Blackburn Road to Kalang Park stretch is the calmer option if you want fewer leads to navigate around. Good for seniors and steady walkers after a long, level route without technical terrain.
