Gardiners Creek Trail

Gardiners Creek Trail runs almost 20 kilometres of sealed shared path through Blackburn's creeklands, linking Blacks Walk, Kalang Park and Furness Park before eventually joining the Main Yarra Trail. The deciding fact for dog owners: leads are compulsory the entire way through this stretch, and a few pockets along the route are off-limits to dogs altogether.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome on lead throughout the Blackburn Creeklands section, under City of Whitehorse rules and those of the adjoining councils the trail passes through. Leads must not exceed 1.5 metres, with dogs under effective control at all times. Wetlands and sanctuary zones, including Bellbird Dell Reserve, Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and protected pockets of Kalang Park, are closed to dogs to protect wildlife.

Max: treat any signed sanctuary or wetland boundary as a hard stop, not a suggestion. The protected pockets in Kalang Park are not always obvious from the main path, so check signage before letting a dog wander off the sealed line.

The walk

AllTrails grades the full route moderate and allows 4.5 to 5 hours end to end, but most people treat it as an out-and-back rather than covering the distance in one go. It is mostly flat and fully sealed, suiting prams and bikes as much as walkers, and the Blackburn section through the creeklands is the prettiest part: established canopy, creek crossings and the sound of birds rather than traffic.

Water and hazards

Poo bag dispensers and water taps exist along the broader trail but they are concentrated near the Gardiners Creek Reserve off-leash area in the Burwood stretch, not this Blackburn leg, so carry your own water and bags. It is a shared commuter route, so expect bikes at peak hours, and keep the lead short across the narrower bridges.

Getting there and parking

Street parking near the Blacks Walk entrance off Blackburn Road puts you on the path, and Blackburn station is an easy walk to the northern end. If you want to give your dog a proper off-leash run after the walk, the Gardiners Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area sits on the same corridor further south.

When to go

Weekday mid-morning is the calm window between the school runs and the commuter bikes. For a different route the following day, the Blackburn Lake Whitehorse Heritage Trail starts nearby, and Aunt Billies Cafe is a coffee stop in the village.
