Mahoneys Reserve Fenced Dog Off Leash Area

Mahoneys Reserve's off-leash area is a fully fenced sports oval in Forest Hill, which makes it one of the safer bets in the area if your dog bolts the moment a lead comes off. It sits at 2 Kira Court, with a dedicated car park and enough room to let a fast dog properly run without a road in sight.

The rules. The oval is fenced, but check the gates are shut before you unclip, since they do get left open. Dogs are not permitted on the adjoining Soccer 1 sportsfield at any time, and you need to keep 2.5 metres clear of the children's playspace and picnic and barbecue areas. If formal training or a match is using the oval, dogs go back on lead until it clears. Effective control applies throughout.

What's there. Partial 1.2 metre fencing runs along the South Mid Oval, there's shade and seating for owners, a water bowl for dogs, and improved lighting for evening visits. Parking is generous, around 40 spaces in the main car park plus a smaller sealed area near the Scout Hall.

Getting there. It's a suburban reserve best reached by car, there's no train line or direct bus stop at the gate, so budget a short drive or walk from nearby streets. Kira Court itself is sometimes open to through traffic, so keep dogs clear of the car park until you're at the gate.

Wednesday and Thursday evenings draw the biggest crowds. If your dog needs a calmer session, Sunday morning through Monday afternoon, or a weekday late morning, is your best bet.
