Terrara Park Dog Off Leash Area

Terrara Park is the big multi-use reserve at 127 Terrara Road in Vermont South, and its dog off-leash area is one of the eastern suburbs' most social runs: a large grassed expanse (with a fenced-off section flagged in local listings) lined with mature shade trees, shared with Whitehorse United Soccer Club. This is a high-traffic park built for running and fetching, not a quiet retreat, and that is exactly why the locals keep coming.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-leash in the designated area under effective voice and hand control at all times. The soccer fields come off the menu whenever organised matches or training are on, so check the turf before you unclip on a weeknight. Whitehorse City Council's buffer rule applies around the playground and the permanent barbecue and picnic areas: dogs stay at least 2.5 metres back, on or off lead. Carry bags and use the bins scattered through the park.

Worth knowing

The facilities are decent for a suburban reserve: mostly flat open grass with natural shade along the tree lines, a drinking tap with an attached bowl near the north-east corner, and an extensive playground on the eastern side that sits in the on-leash zone. The busy dog traffic means a steady rotation of playmates, which suits confident social dogs; shy or reactive dogs will have a better hour at one of the smaller reserves nearby.

Max: Keep recall sharp before you unclip the lead here. With soccer training some evenings and a playground close by, voice control is what keeps everyone on the right side of the rules.

Getting there and parking

A large free off-street car park sits on the northern side of the reserve; approach via High Street Road or Burwood Highway and turn onto Terrara Road. By tram, take Route 75 to Stop 71 at the Vermont South Shopping Centre end of Burwood Highway and walk down Terrara Road. The car park fills quickly during peak sports training.

Close by with the dogs

For a change of scene, Glen Waverley North Reserve is a similar open run a few suburbs south, and Mahoneys Reserve in Forest Hill adds a fenced off-leash option for dogs who need contained play. For coffee afterwards, Café 1809 on Willow Avenue welcomes dogs at its outdoor tables.
