Simpson Park in Mitcham is a large, mostly flat reserve on Dudley Street with a genuine 24-hour off-leash area across its northern and eastern sections, making it one of the more convenient neighbourhood off-leash spots in Whitehorse.

The rules. Whitehorse City Council designates the off-leash area 24/7, with dogs kept out of playgrounds, picnic areas and active sports fields.

  • Dogs must be under effective control at all times and return immediately on command.
  • Keep your dog within 25 metres and in clear view.
  • Carry a lead no longer than 1.5 metres so you can bring your dog under control if needed.
  • Dogs aren't allowed on sports fields, or within 2.5 metres of the perimeter, when organised sport or training is underway.

What's there. Wide open, largely unfenced grassy space good for fetch and long runs, plus an on-site car park, toilets and a playground for kids. The park connects to a walking trail for a longer loop.

Getting there. Free on-site parking is available off Dudley Street or Somers Street, and it's a short walk from Mitcham station on the Lilydale line, so it's easy to reach without a car.

Watch-outs. The ground gets muddy and damp through winter, so gumboots and a towel for the car are worth having on hand.

Nearby with the dogs. Dark Horse on the Brit, a short drive away in Britannia Mall, welcomes dogs on its outdoor deck, and Cornerfolk Cafe on Mitcham Road is another dog-friendly option close by.

When to go. Sunday mornings are the busiest, with the biggest gathering of dogs and walkers. For a quieter run, aim for a weekday afternoon or early morning instead.

Carry a short lead even off-leash. If organised sport is on, give the fields and that 2.5 metre buffer a wide berth rather than testing it.
