Gardiners Creek Reserve's off leash area follows the creek through Burwood in a long, shaded line of parkland, one of the better used dog spots in Whitehorse thanks to mature gums, a sealed shared path and easy tram access. There is no fence, so it suits dogs with dependable recall who are happy to share a path with cyclists and other walkers.

The dog setup

Off leash is permitted within the signed zone along the reserve, with big open grassy patches and gravel paths under good tree cover, which matters on hot Melbourne days. Waste bins are spaced along the track and there is usually a water tap near the main path, though bringing your own bowl is the safe bet. The reserve runs long enough that you can usually find clear space even on busy mornings.

The rules here

Whitehorse's public space rules apply: dogs off leash must stay in sight, come back immediately when called, and not pester other users or wildlife. Leash up in the car park, keep 2.5 metres clear of the playground perimeter, as council rules require, and clip the lead on along the creek's steep banks, which crumble and are not worth the risk for a dog hot on a scent. Carry bags and use the bins; rangers patrol the area.

The reserve sits off Elgar Road near the Riversdale Road corner, with a small car park off Elgar Road plus surrounding residential streets, all of which fill up on weekend mornings. Tram route 70 stops close by, a genuinely easy option if you would rather skip the parking hunt. There is also access from the Glengarry Avenue end.

Weekday mid mornings and early afternoons are quietest, while weekend mornings and commute hour evenings draw the regulars. The crowd skews towards experienced owners with well socialised dogs, and the shared path keeps everyone moving, so it feels more like a walking route with play stops than a stand-around dog park.
