Batesford Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Batesford Reserve is a large unfenced off-leash reserve on Power Avenue in Chadstone, built around a flat open oval with a playground, BBQ areas, bins and a car park alongside. It is a shared community reserve rather than a purpose-built dog park, and the unfenced boundary running onto the street is the fact that decides whether it suits your dog.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-leash across the reserve under effective voice control, and the open, level ground makes for good sprinting and ball work. There is no dedicated dog fencing anywhere on the site, so a dog that bolts will find no fence between the grass and Power Avenue.

The rules shift with what else is on: if an organised sport match or training session is using the oval, leash up until it clears, and dogs stay leashed near the playground. Bag your own waste and carry bags with you, because supply on site is not guaranteed.

The vibe

This is a locals' ground rather than a destination dog park: weeknight training groups, weekend sport, dog owners working around both. Confident dogs with reliable recall do well here. Nervous dogs or those still learning to come back are better served by a fenced option nearby, and Jordan Reserve in Chadstone fills that gap.

Being unfenced also means the usual wildlife and foot traffic apply. Magpies in spring, pram traffic around the playground on weekends, and other dogs arriving off-lead from three directions. If your dog needs a warm-up on lead before settling, walk the perimeter path first and watch who else is on the oval.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off Power Avenue in Chadstone, close to the Monash Freeway and a short drive from Chadstone Shopping Centre. The on-site car park handles most visits, though it fills when junior sport is on Saturday mornings.

Close by with the dogs
