Damper Creek Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Damper Creek Reserve is a native bushland reserve in Mount Waverley, managed by the City of Monash, where a creek and unsealed tracks wind through genuine bush in the middle of suburbia. It is a lovely walk, but the headline for dog owners is that most of the reserve is on-leash. Off-leash applies only in two specific, signposted zones, so this is a read-the-signs park rather than an unclip-anywhere one.

Off-leash status

Dogs may go off-lead only inside the two designated, signposted parcels within the reserve; everywhere else, including all walking tracks and the creek line, the lead stays on. Even in an off-leash zone, effective voice or hand control is required and dogs must not chase or disturb native wildlife, which is the whole reason the rules are tight here: Damper Creek is a conservation reserve and wildlife corridor. Keep your dog leashed within 20 metres of the playground, and bin waste at the entrances. Council tightened the off-leash arrangements at this reserve some years back, so older online advice claiming free-ranging is outdated.

Max: This is mostly an on-leash conservation reserve. Confirm the signposted off-leash zone before letting your dog go, and keep them off the wildlife.

Water and terrain

The tracks are unsealed and undulating, with boardwalk sections over the damp ground and uneven footing in places. Expect mud on paws after rain and skip the low sections if the creek has been up. There are no dog water taps, so bring your own, and a small playground sits at the reserve edge.

Getting there and parking

Entries and informal street parking sit along Waimarie Drive and Park Lane, reached from High Street Road or Waverley Road. Jordanville Station on the Glen Waverley line is a short walk away if you are arriving by train with a leashed dog.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the calmest; weekend mornings and the after-work slot draw the regulars. This reserve suits dogs who enjoy a proper bush walk, sniffing the full length of a fern gully, more than a big open run. If your dog needs a gallop, plan that elsewhere.
